FAITH, FAMILY & HEALING

The Story of Dr. Roberto Clemente Mendoza March 30, 1940 – March 27, 2011

Dr. Roberto Clemente Mendoza’s legacy is one of deep love, purpose, and unwavering devotion — to his wife and partner, Mirna Mendoza (Lagos), to family and to service. Married in 1964 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Roberto and Mirna began their life together rooted in faith, family  and healing, welcoming their first daughter in 1965, Minny Mendoza Lavelle, the current Managing Director of Mendoza Medical Clinic.

The Mendoza’s journey began with service, moving to Roatán, Honduras to care for a remote island community. This spirit of giving would define their lives. In 1966, they immigrated to the Bronx, New York where Dr. Mendoza began his U.S. medical career, became a Board Certified Pediatrician and it’s the city where Peggy and Robert were born. Peggy Mendoza serves as the Chief Operations Officer for Mendoza Medical Clinic. In 1972, the family moved to Man, West Virginia, where Dr. Mendoza completed his residency, embodying resilience in rural America.

By 1974, they found home in New Orleans. Drawn by its culture and soul, they settled permanently, and Dr. Mendoza became the first Latino Chief of Pediatrics at Baptist Community Hospital. He later opened the Mendoza Medical Clinic, treating generations of children with compassion and excellence, something we continue to do 50 years later (2025).

In 1975, they bought the family home in Kenner — the heart of the Mendoza legacy — and in 1977, welcomed Ricky, the youngest. Today, Ricky raises his family in that same home, a living testament of planting deep roots in this community.

Dr. Mendoza and Mirna were more than immigrants and healers — they were builders of legacy. Their story lives on in their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as well as every life touched by their kindness. Today, we stand on their shoulders and live the lesson they taught us that with faith, family, and healing, anything is possible.
